Although WordPress’s mission is still “Democratize Publishing”, it has democratized so much more in its almost 19 years of existence.
As a tool, WordPress has allowed millions of people around the world – including in disadvantaged regions – to create their own businesses either developing websites and applications for others or by inventing awesome products in the form of plugins and themes for the ecosystem.
Unlike traditional industries, where the top-companies are usually located in the global north, WordPress companies are all around the globe, including the global south.
The idea behind this proposal is to discuss and appreciate the beauty of the WordPress ecosystem, how it differs from these traditional industries, and how it has been leading the way in terms of empowering its users, companies built around it, and their workers.
